Minimal Translation respects user privacy.

This extension is designed to translate selected text or user-triggered visible page text on webpages and provide related dictionary and text-to-speech features. The extension does not require account registration and does not intentionally collect personal identity information.

Information We Process

How Information Is Used

Data Storage

The extension uses Chrome storage to save user settings. These settings may include source and target language preferences, enabled translation providers, TTS voice mode and playback settings, site whitelist and blacklist rules, model content protection mode and model-site whitelist rules, commercial translation endpoint configuration provided by the user, optional model endpoint configuration provided by the user such as service configuration, protocol, provider name, base URL, API key, model name, timeout, and retry settings, and other extension preferences required for functionality.

The extension does not maintain its own remote user database.

On-device Translation and Model Downloads

Chrome built-in translation is the default. Optional OPUS-MT, Qwen / WebLLM and HY-MT also translate on-device without uploading translation text. Chrome manages its language resources. OPUS-MT/Qwen/HY-MT model data downloads from Hugging Face and its data CDN only when requested by the user. Downloads expose ordinary network metadata but contain no webpage text. Data is cached in the extension origin and can be deleted in Options; browser eviction requires preparation again.

All executable JavaScript and Wasm ship in the extension. The offscreen permission hosts the translation document and workers after Settings is closed. Wasm is restricted to packaged resources. Dictionary, OCR, grammar and configured model services may still send data when explicitly used.

Third-Party Services

Depending on the user configuration, selected text or visible page text from an actively triggered visible-area translation may be sent to optional model translation endpoints configured by the user, local or cloud compatible model gateways when enabled, dictionary APIs, public OCR services, and public grammar services.

These services are operated by their respective providers and may have their own privacy policies and terms.

On-device translation stays on the device. When a model service is selected, each translation request is sent only to that service and is not automatically forwarded to another provider after a failure.

Before text is sent to an enabled model source, the extension can locally evaluate the current page URL, page title, and the text that is about to be sent. Standard protection requires confirmation for medium-risk content and blocks high-risk content. Strict protection also requires the current site to be on a separate model whitelist. This evaluation runs in the browser and is not sent to Cloudflare or a remote moderation service. It reduces accidental transmission risk but does not determine whether content is legal and cannot guarantee that a provider will not restrict an account.

Data Sharing

Minimal Translation does not sell user data.

The extension only shares selected text, actively triggered visible page text, and required request metadata with the translation, LLM/model, dictionary, OCR, or grammar provider needed to fulfill the requested feature.

Minimal Translation does not use the processed data for advertising personalization and does not operate its own remote user account system.

Security

We aim to minimize data usage and only process what is needed for translation and related features. However, no online service can guarantee absolute security.

Children

This extension is not specifically directed to children under 13.
